Address: Viale dei Romagnoli 717, 00119 Ostia Antica, Italy.

If you are looking for a sightseeing day outside of Rome during your stay in the Eternal City, then Ostia Antica should definitely be on your list. Easily reachable - there are trains more or less every 15 minutes during peak times - this ancient city is comparable to a small Pompeii in terms of its ancient ruins and archaeological importance. Also known as the 'Harbour City of Ancient Rome', the city was originally on the sea, at the mouth of the River Tiber. However, due to silting, it now lies an incredible 3 kilometres (2 miles) from the sea.

Many of the ruins at Ostia Antica date back to the 4th century BC, but it is thought that the area was founded before then and was probably Rome's first 'colonnia'. Before its decline after the fall of the Roman Empire, the city had became a great port and commercial centre with a population of around 50,000 inhabitants. Over the centuries it was left to ruin after being plundered for its marble and materials. The city ruins remained preserved for hundreds of years, as it was slowly covered and protected by the silt. Modern day excavation techniques have helped archaeologists to discover the city's ruins and to carefully excavate them.

Entrance tickets are currently 10 Euros for adults and the site is generally open from 8:30am to 6:00pm. But please check the official website above for further information. Please note that on the first Sunday of every month, entrance is free for everyone!
