Rome Attractions Colosseum

Posted 14.03.2014 by Leigh

Address: Colosseum, Piazza del Colosseo 1, 00184 Rome, Italy.

The most visited tourist attraction in Rome is probably also its most iconic, namely the Colosseum (Italian: Colosseo) which attracts 4 million visitors a year. The Colosseum is the world's largest amphitheatre and was estimated to be able to hold from 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. It was built and completed by the Romans in circa 80AD and was originally constructed to be used for gladiatorial contests and other types of public spectacles. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and although its splendour has of course deteriorated through the ages, it is open for visits, but remember that queues can be long.
