The Roman Forum in Rome (Italian: Foro Romano) lies just a stone's throw from the impressive Colosseum and is the fifth most visited attraction in the Eternal City (2.5 million visitors a year). The Forum was the centre of Ancient Rome and was often referred to at the 'marketplace'. It is a rectangular 'square' which today is surrounded by by the ruins of several important Ancient Roman government buildings and shrines, such as royal residence, the Regia, the Temple of Vesta and Arch of Septimius Severus.
