The Sistine Chapel (Italian: Cappella Sistina) is located in the Vatican City and attracts 3 million visitors per year. It was originally known as the 'Cappella Magna' until it was re-named after Pope Sixtus IV, who restored it between 1477 and 1480. The interior of the chapel is renowned for its ornate wall and ceiling frescoes and especially for its ceiling which was painted by Michelangelo (The Last Judgement, between 1508 and 1512), and which became one of his masterpieces that was to change the course of Western art. Today the chapel is home to the the Papal conclave, the process in which a new Pope is selected.

Mondays - Saturdays: 9:00am - 7:00pm
Last admission at 4:00pm
Free entry on Sundays (except the last Sunday of every month): 9:00am - 12:30pm
