The Rome Marathon is celebrating its 20th anniversary on the 23rd March 2014. The marathon has increased in popularity over the years and in 2013 there were more than 14,000 participants. The Rome Marathon makes good use of its unique surroundings and for the new millenium it incorporated its status as the capital of the Catholic Church by moving the start area to Saint Peter’s Square. Here, the Pope himself wished all the runners good luck before the run. If a full marathon seems to daunting, then fear not, as you can take part in the shorter RomaFun 5KM race.

Several well-known marathon runners will take part this year in the hope of breaking the route's record, which currently stands at 2:07.17 for the men's race (Benjamin Kiptoo (Kenya) in 2009) and 2:22.53 for the women's race (Galina Bogomolova (Russia) in 2008).

The deadline for registration is the 10th March, 2014 and the fee is currently 75 Euros. Each participant will also receive a rucksack and a technical t-shirt branded with 'Maratona di Roma'.

An added bonus for all participants is that you will have free travel on the city's public transport system (buses, trams and the metro) throughout the day of the marathon, just ensure that you are wearing your marathon or 5K bib!

There is also a post-race after party which will take place at the Gilda Bar (97 Via Mario Dè Fiori, 00187 Rome/from 6:00pm till late) and includes music, food and entertainment. Admission: 10 Euros for Rome Marathon and RomaFun 5K participants (includes buffet and first drink) and free entry for children under 14 (if accompanied by a paying adult).
